David Robertson Won’t Pitch in 2020
The Phillies signed right-hander David Robertson before last season, in hopes that his durability and reliability would help the back-end of the bullpen.
Unfortunately, Robertson has been neither durable or reliable and now is second season in Philadelphia is done, before it even started. The team has opted to shut him down have he suffered a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
The 35-year old signed a 2-year, $23 million deal with the Phillies, but only was able to appear in seven games with the team, struggling with a 5.40 ERA, 2.10 WHIP, in just 6.2 innings last year. The team has a has a $2 million buyout option for next season, if they don't pick up, they will owe him another #12 million for the 2021 season.
The veteran was a key member of the Yankees bullpen in 2018, when he went 8-3 with five saves and a 3.23 ERA in 69 appearances.
While Robertson will no longer be counted on to help the Phillies bullpen, the team did add three new arms before tomorrow's trade deadline: Brandon Workman, Heath Hembree and David Hale. Since their additions, the Phillies bullpen has been better, with Workman working the ninth and Hector Neris, Tommy Hunter and Adam Morgan providing more depth. Workman have three saves in five games since coming over from Boston.
